The film tells the story of one day, centered around two sisters, Bianka and Milán. On December 22nd, they travel from Budapest to their hometown in the countryside to celebrate Christmas. As the „prodigal sons,” they had left their hometown long ago, but now they return to it. Through their eyes, we witness the fate of the Hungarian countryside. Old friends and past relationships that once worked well are now seen in a different light, highlighting the challenges of our generation of thirty-somethings. The film explores the question of what comes next in life when we are no longer children but have yet to become full-fledged adults.

In the story, I Never See You (working title), art teacher Krisztina gradually loses her eyesight as a complication of diabetes, which leads to a crisis not only in her own but also in her son’s life. Máté is confronted with Krisztina’s condition after the birth of his first child. He tries his best to help his mother, but his life is slowly being torn apart by the increasingly clinging mother and her own family. Meanwhile, Krisztina is afraid of being alone in the dark.

The project won at the Hungarian Film Institute’s Incubator Program
(https://nfi.hu/en/training/incubator-program), which supports young, first-time directors, with a low budget to realize their first feature.

Olivér Rudolf’s Cactusman was selected for the 35th Trieste Film Festival.

The short film will be screened in the Off the beaten…screens section.
Off the beaten.. screens is a showcase dedicated to new perspectives and new cinematic forms, from works that are „freer” in their durations and narrative structures, to hybridizations of genres and languages: different and original points of view on cinema and the world. The festival kicks off from January 19 to 27.

Cactusman is a melodrama in three pictures. Tibor has been in love with Alíz since she first took his clothes to the dry cleaners. It was Tuesday, raining. Her wet hair stuck to her forehead. He would rather never wash her clothes again, because they smell like lilacs.

Cineuropa’s news about Bernadette Mayer’s shooting

Fotó kredit: Karolina Kárász

Shooting on Bernadette Mayer’s debut feature film I Never See You (Szemem fénye) (working titles), which is due to wrap on 13 December, has now entered the home straight. The young filmmaker (who has also worked as a director of photography on several short films) has secured Anikó Für (notably well-received in The Inventor [+], Eternal Winter [+] and Coming Out) and Benett Vilmányi (recently at his best in Wandering LeavesPreparations To Be Together For An Unknown Period of Time [+] and Guerilla [+], and hitting screens next year in Silent Night) to lead the cast of her work.

They’re joined by Szabolcs Hajdu (crowned Best Actor in Karlovy Vary 2016 by way of It’s Not The Time Of My Life [+], which scooped the Crystal Globe and which he directed himself, and seen in this year’s movies Power [+] and Kalman’s Day [+]), István Znamenák (the winner of the Best Supporting Role trophy in Hungarian Film Week 2018 via The Citizen [+] and very well-received in this year’s Venice Film Festival via Explanation for Everything [+]), Andrea Waskovics (Erasing Frank [+]) and Ildiko Hamori (named Best Actress in Hungarian Film Week 2021, thanks to Pilate).

Written by Bernadette Mayer together with Zoltán Nagy (On the Quiet [+]), the story revolves around Krisztina, an art teacher who is progressively losing her sight as a complication of diabetes. It engenders a crisis, not only in her own life but also in that of her son. Máté must contend with the state of his mother’s health immediately following the birth of his first child. He does his best to help Krisztina, but his life is gradually torn between his increasingly clingy mother and his own little family. Krisztina, meanwhile, fears being alone in the dark…

I Never See You is produced by Genovéva Petrovits (selected as one of 2023’s Emerging Producers – read our interview) on behalf of Kino Alfa, and enjoyed support from the Hungarian National Film Institute’s Incubator Programme. The 25-day film-shoot (which kicked off on 29 August) unfolded in Budapest, with Eszter Csepeli heading up cinematography.
